what about layers of a certain wood for people to put together with light durable glue plus a handle to glue on as well. So layers shaped like a flaired paddle, putting 5-7 layers of basswood together as a new custom blade

Give it a go and see how it feels. It may just work out OK for you. The only way to really know is to try it out.

I made my own blade, and it ended up being ok, but it was a bit heavy. It was 1-ply made out of spruce, and I'd say it ended up being about ALL or ALL+.
