Hi coach, i am currently facing a strange problem. I learned the pendulum serve and do it pretty good and it also generates spin. But the problem is that it doesn't have any effect on the opponent's bat. My practice partner says that there is no spin on the ball and he can return it easily. But if the ball somehow stops at the net, i can see the ball rotating quite fast ! But still it doesnt have any effect on the bat. The ball kinda loses its spin after bouncing for the second time (first bounce on my side, and second bounce is on the opponent's side). I dont think it has anything to do with my rubbers because i m using stiga Evo rubber (speed 83, spin 87, control 52). Please help me.

Regards,
Rahul Kumar

Hi Rahul,

It sounds like you have the action right.  Try to get the bat to come through faster during the swing so that you can generate some more spin.  You can also get the ball to travel a bit faster.  If the ball is travelling faster it will spin off the bat faster as well.  Also see if you can get the ball to contact the bat a little further away from the handle.  This may help you to get more spin as well.

well generally i keep trying to move my bat faster but as i move it faster, the momentum of bat increases and the ball gets hit with even greater force..... and so it simply goes far from the table. i always wonder how some players can spin faster even if the ball comes with slow speed...??

If you get a finer contact the ball won't travel as far.  The finer the contact the less distance the ball will go, the thicker the contact the further it will go.

sometimes when trying to get a finer contact i completely miss the ball! Or sometimes i hit the ball with the edge of my bat after which the ball goes nowhere but straight upwards lol. I think i still do need practice of spins.

Yes that is a natural process.  That should happen lots before you get it right.  If it isn't happening you probably aren't doing it right.
