hi alois,

yesterday (feb 5) was my first district tournament. i went through the quarter finals in the category of under 13 years but i lost to a player .his bh rubber was long pips for 5 sets he got 3 so i lost....the prob is when he serves a spin serve i always attack it....now the question is when should i start to play shots or topspin??should i push the first ball or what???a litle help here

Hi Rahul,

Well done on getting to the quarter finals.  

You should when playing against long pimple players you need to understand the effect of the pimples.  Remember if you put a lot of backspin on the ball you are likely to get a topspin ball back of the pimples and vice versa.

So if you start with a backspin ball you may get an easier ball to attack next.  So you can wait for the right ball before you need to attack.

They are the same thing. Just a change of name.

how should we return a sidespin serve??and a backspin serve

You need to counter both the backspin and the sidespin. If the ball is short then the easiest thing to do is push the ball back. To counter the backspin you need to open up the angle of your racket. This will counter the backspin which wants to drag the ball down off your racket. You also need to counter the sidespin by angling your bat to the correct side.
