Receiving
I played a 2500+ player in the handicap event, I read and returned his first serve which was topspin and scored a point. But he began serving was side under and it was pretty low. I tried lifting but the ball had so much spin it would drop into the net. I tried pushing, same result. How to you return a low side under with heavy spin on your forehand side? I'm a lefty by the way, and the guy I was playing was right handed.
Hi Mike,
To lift that really heavy backspin firstly make sure you have your bat very open, facing the roof. Then if it is really heavy and the ball is still not going over the net, as you come through with the stroke just lift your bat up a little as well.
As you feel more comfortable, focus on keeping your hand relaxed as well. This will also help to absorb some of the spin.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
