Returning side spin

Receiving

Hi Jeff,

Am I correct to say that you are receiving an anti clockwise side spin whereby the ball will spin off to the left side after landing on the table? But if the side spin is in a clockwise direction heading towards your backhand, how should we return the ball? If we return the ball as how you do, the ball will fly out of the table to the extreme right. Should we be hitting on the back or right side of the the ball?

Hi Gary,

Yes, you need to hit that on the right side of the ball.  You may find it easier with your forehand to get the angle of the bat right.  You can use your backhand but you need to bend your wrist right back to get the angle right.

Thank you for your confirmation of the mechanics of returning the ball. It still boils down to trial n error of returning the ball which may come with different degrees of spin vs your angle of contact n the speed of your return.

Yes it certainly does.  Like everything with Table Tennis it comes back to doing it often and trial and error because there are so many fine details that need to be perfected.
