Serving
Hi PingSkills,
It is easy for me to serve a fast long ball and a short slow ball. What adjustments should be made in order to serve a slow long ball and a short fast ball?
Thanks in advance...
Hi Viki,
To serve a slow long ball you can slow down the contact on the ball and get the ball to bounce a little higher over the net.
To serve a short fast ball is a little trickier. You need a good fast contact on the ball but you also need a lot of spin. A lot of topspin will bring the ball down quickly as soon as it goes over the net. This does take a lot of practice.
The best way to do it is to set up a small target just over the net and try to serve the ball as fast as possible onto that target.
We cover this in one of our Premium lessons.
The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
