Serving with the Backhand

Serving

Hi Alois,

I watched your pendulum serve video and I noticed that basically all of the top players serve with the forehand rather than with the backhand. Why is this and should I change my serve?

(I serve with the BH)

Hi Rafe,

I think this is the case because it is easier to utilise the wrist when you are serving with the forehand.

I may be wrong, but I think it's also because, although you are not allowed to hide the ball/bat contact anymore, with the pendulum serve you can hide your swing and bat angle until the last moment, while with the backhand serve everything is clearly visible for your opponent. I think the deception is therefore easier to achieve with the pendulum. Not mentioning that some do actually hide their serves with the pendulum, as until a fairly high level you get very rarely punished for that.

Even at the world class level they get very rarely punished for hiding the serve...
