Although this is less of a technical question, it deals with an equally important part of the game: mentality. I have been playing a huge amount lately and after beating all of my opponents quite handily for a while, I have begun to get into a slump. I have two questions about this. One, am I just being irrational or can table tennis players truly get into slumps where they just can't seem to hit shots that should come easy. And two, if slumps are a part of competitive play, is there any way to get out of it?

 Thanks for the help.

Hi Cody,

You can certainly get into a slump.  It just means that you aren't playing as well as you can.  Firstly remember that you can't always be at the top of your game.  There will naturally be times when you are playing a bit better and times when you are playing worse.  Just accept that as a fact.

In this situation I find it useful to go back a step.  Think about getting the ball on the table more.  Instead of going for pinpoint accuracy, think about getting the ball into play a few more times.  Don't try to do the shots you think you can do, just go back to basics.  Once you start to get a few more balls on the table you can then step it up a little.

Remember though some days things just don't happen for you.  That is just a fact of playing sport.  The more you try to fight it, the worse it can get.
